i could see some problems with this - mainly nepotism, and of course would that be once ever or just once for every three, and so on and so on but still interesting

a counter i suppose would be to have a user run spotlight system (again with people just doing their own/friends works) but idk how that would work. . .

Could have some kind of 'like' mechanism where people can flag stories that they particularly enjoyed. Past a certain threshold, they appear in a "User's Choice" category for a bit.

Something like that, maybe.

I have been on the Editor's Choice once, and it was a very big achievement for me. Instead of a separate list, they could merge, and users could submit a story that they believe should be on there, andthen voting for the stories to go on there...
